#1 layers
“Thinner hair types definitely need layers,” says celebrity hairstylist Laura Polko. “Layers really help and keep the hair from getting too long. I find that people with finer hair sometimes get stuck with long hair because it makes them think longer [hair] looks fuller, but it’s better to keep it shorter.” Polko also has a few tips on what to ask your stylist for. “Don’t ask for choppy layers, longer layers are better and frame the face. Choppy layers work best on thicker hair types as they take out volume, but if you don’t have enough volume there’s nothing to remove.”
She also finds it important to have the right tools at hand. “Use a tool like the T3 AireBrush Duo to build volume. Use the AireBrush Duo’s round brush attachment and blow at the base to create volume. This blow dry brush is easier than having to worry about a traditional round brush and blow dryer.”

#2 Classic one-length bob
Star stylist Jennifer Korab loves this special style for thinner hair types. “A one-length bob is timeless, classic, and never goes out of style,” she says. Her tips for increasing volume include a few more classic methods. “Thickening lotions, volumizing mousse and root lifters are great products for adding volume when blow drying. Once you’re done, using a texturizing spray can also help add volume without weighing your hair down.”

#3 Curly bangs
I know bangs aren’t for everyone, but those with curly hair are just extra cute. Curls tend to have a bit more volume naturally, but if you have them and want to add even more lift, try these on for size. A good curl cream is absolutely crucial when sporting curly bangs like Design Essentials’ almond and avocado-enriched formula. It adds tons of hold and moisture to keep your curls from losing their shape throughout the day.

#4 Blunt cut
Korab also loves this no-nonsense style – it strategically enhances the strands. “I like a blunt haircut for thinner hair types,” she says. “This haircut keeps most of the weight at the ends, giving a thicker, fuller, and healthier look.”

#5 Invisible layers
Ghost layers, also known as invisible layers, are another easy way to add some volume to hair. Korab has broken down the benefits for us. “These are layers that are seamless and can be strategically placed throughout the hair to encourage movement. This is in contrast to traditional layering, which sometimes makes fine hair appear thinner. ”

#6 Modern Stacked Bob
Celebrity hairstylist Kevin Kelly loves a stacked bob for fine hair because it has layers stacked at the back that add volume. “It creates the illusion of thicker hair while retaining some length,” he shares.

#7 Shag haircut
Shag cuts are popping up all over RN. Luckily, a shag cut is really versatile and works for straight, wavy, and curly hair. The various piecey layers in this cut add volume and added body to thinner hair types. The feathered layers offer a bit more lift around the crown of your head and make your hair appear fuller.

#8 Extra Long Layers
If your hair is long and thin and you don’t necessarily want to chop off a lot of length, opt for longer layers with a few to frame the face. Kelly loves this for fine to medium hair types. To add volume while styling, Kelly has a few things ready. “Some products I like to use to build volume are mousse or something that expands the cuticles like Paul Mitchell’s Extra-Body Thicken Up, or my favorite is hairspray. Mist section by section onto roots and blow dry in an upward motion.”

#9 Volume Boosting Side Part
Although this is more of a style than a cut, parting your new layered look on the side instead of the middle can add quite a bit of volume. You can blow dry or blow dry it this way in the morning with a product like Kristin Ess Style Assist Blow Dry Mist and then part your hair for a naturally tousled look.

#10 Layers with Curtain Bangs
Curtain bangs add that extra something to any style. Paired with strategic layers, they also sneakily make your hair appear a lot thicker than it actually is. Add a little texturizing spray or mousse at the crown if you want some extra lift too.

#11 Curly pixie cut
Similar to a shag cut, a pixie cut that is a little tousled adds volume to the hair. If you’re feeling extra bold and want to cut your strands completely, give it a try. Those with finer curls can really rock a pixie cut and it adds so much body to the top of your head.

#12 A-line Bob
Making your back neckline a little shorter will naturally add volume. An A-line bob (or graduated bob) is perfect for this and another great option for those looking to go shorter. Celebrity stylist Michelle Cleveland says, “In the world of haircuts, the rule of thumb for fine/thin hair is ‘short’ pushes long,” she says. “This means shorter hair underneath pushes longer hair up and creates instant volume. With.” With that theory in mind, a good haircut that follows this rule is a graduated bob (think Victoria Beckham’s famous cut). ”
