It seems like only yesterday that TikTok declared the side part dead, but if Instagram is any indication, the style has definitely made a comeback. Side parting hairstyles have recently appeared on all of our favorite stars, from the Kardashian-Jenner family to Megan Thee Stallion. Once considered dated by Gen Z, the side part is popping up all over the red carpet for its romantic, side-swept look and versatility. Curls and braids, wavy and curly – a side parting makes every hairstyle look good.
Kim Kardashian was one of the biggest influences in the side part renaissance and gave her style a millennial twist with a slicked back look at the CFDA Awards. Similarly, Kylie Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian took a page from their sister’s beauty book and recently sported similar side parts.
According to Jennifer Korab, owner of Renaissance Salon, there are a few products that are essential for styling a side part. “One of my favorites is using a volumizing mousse like Pureology Weightless Mousse or Kerastase Desifique. When styling your side parting on wet hair, the mouse will help hold your hairstyle in place and add some volume to the hairstyle.”
Celebrity hairstylist Jamie Wiley also suggests using Pureology’s Levitation Mist. “When I style a side part, I like to use a large hook and loop roller to set it back and away from the face. Lift hair with Levitation Mist at the roots using a flat brush and a round brush at the ends. Place the hair on a large Velcro-backed roller until cool. This creates lift at the roots and the perfect sweep moving back into the style.”
If you’re new to side parting, Korab advises retraining your hair to fall appropriately. “Cut off your side part and secure with a bobby pin. This will help train your hair to be side-parted.” To speed things up, celebrity colorist Ashleigh Marie recommends blow-drying your hair with a Hot Tools blow-dryer brush to give the hair a curve.
