The formula is said to offer “buildable coverage” with a “hint” of dew that can be applied with fingertips, a sponge, or a duo-bristle brush and should be applied before powder products. I was struggling to apply the formula, and I’ve tried using fingertips, sponges, and various brushes both over the foundation and under the foundation, on bare skin, and even over the powder (which is the opposite of what they do say!).
For me the problem seemed to be that there was way too much slip in the product so the color wasn’t applied and blended, it was just pushed around. It had the worst application when using my fingertips to apply, which I applied by tapping and pressing the color (gently!) onto my cheeks and using the edge of my fingertip to soften. This is my favorite method with cream based cheek colors and it usually works, but I couldn’t get the color to stay and settle.
I tried using a sponge but the sponge seemed to absorb a lot of the paint making it difficult to get any detectable coverage out of it. I found that a stippling brush worked better, and I gently flicked the brush against my cheeks to apply color, waited 10 seconds, and then attempted to spread and even out the color. This worked somewhat and sometimes, but unfortunately it didn’t always work and when it didn’t work almost no color was visible.
Since it seemed overly smooth, most of my application attempts I squeezed the product out on the back of my hand so I could swirl or pick up the product as it had dried a bit, but that didn’t help much! The “best” method I found was to gently dab the product onto my cheeks with my fingertips, leave it on for five to 10 seconds, then use a synthetic brush to soften the edges and each area with the gentlest touch to treat only once and then leave it alone and accept whatever the result was.
It didn’t work well with the various base products I tried — a mix of liquid foundations and tinted moisturizers, both set and unset — as it tended to push them around or lift them. They were better on bare skin, but they were a real challenge to work with. They also weren’t buildable in my experience as it caused the first layer to move and lift off the main area leaving a raised edge of product.
The consistency was very runny to the point where it felt runny; it would use gravity to slide across the back of my hand, and fast. It took a while to dry and was somewhat moveable with a light dew in the finish, but it wasn’t sticky. They lasted about six hours on me before visibly fading.
