in the Fashion Cover story published January 4th Billie Eilish talks about feeling betrayed and alienated from her body, especially after a growth plate injury at age 13 that ended her dancing ambitions. She then suffered more lower body injuries, followed by misdiagnosis before a movement coach revealed to Eilish that she suffers from a condition called hypermobility.
“I spent my teenage years hating myself and all that stupid shit. A lot of it came from my anger at my body,” she says. “I felt like my body would set me on fire for years.”
After her dreams of dancing were shattered, she turned to music but continued to have a strained relationship with her body. Eilish, who made oversized, baggy clothing her trademark early in her career, later said she wore oversized clothing to protect herself from critics. In a 2019 Calvin Klein campaign, she shared, “I mean, that’s why I wear big, baggy clothes. No one can have an opinion because they haven’t seen what’s underneath it.”
On her 18th birthday, Eilish decided to switch up her style and opened up about it ell “I will be a woman. I want to show my body.” In May 2021, Eilish debuted a fresh blonde cut and revealing corset on a shoot with British Fashion marking a new era for her that felt like growing up. Her confidence blossomed over time and she felt comfortable showing some skin.
